The book outlines veld management and assessment approaches for a wide geographical area from the Succulent Karoo veld of Namaqualand through the Mixed Karoo veld to the Grassy Karoo and Spekboom veld further east. As the introduction to the book points out:
"the more we know about this extraordinary ecosystem works, the better we (livestock farmers and other enterprises) can adapt our management to avoid drought disasters, avoid veld degradation and maintain animal productivity without loss of species diversity and natural resources."
The guide will assist the land user to apply ecologically friendly veld management and to evaluate the effect of grazing and restoration on the veld. It will also be useful to prospective land users who need to estimate the potential and suitability of the land for a new enterprise before making the investment.
"All you need to know in order to evaluate your veld is how to read the plants and soil - the vital signs of the health of your land? land users should leave the land in as good or in a better state than they found it." Appendices provide useful information on the palatability of common karoo plants (with a picture reference), invasive alien plants, lists of consultants, technical publications and Large Stock Unit equivalent to estimate forage requirements for small stock and game.
