Meerjarige raaigras (Lolium perenne)


Habitat 
Raaigras is veral volop in gebiede met 'n koel klimaat en ho? re?nval. Dit groei dikwels op klam versteunde plekke soos padreserwes en ou landerye in feitlik alle grondsoorte. Dit word ook in ander dele onder besproeiing aangeplant. 

Soorgelyke spesies 
Lolium perenne is baie na verwant aan en kruis maklik met ander Lolium-spesies. Dit word maklikste met L. multiflorum verwar en daar bestaan dikwels kruisings met oorvleuelde kenmerke. L. perenne word van tipiese voorbeelde van L. multiflorum onderskei, deurdat laasgenoemde kafnaalde van 10 mm lank het. 

Gebruike 
Meerjarige raaigras tesame met die eenjarige, Italiaanse raaigras (Lolium multiflorum) is gewilde aangeplante wiedings. Hulle is veral geskik vir winterweiding (meestal onder besproeiing). Albei grasse kan egter giftig wees wanneer hulle geinfeteer is deur 'n gifproduserende bakterie, Corynebacterium rathayi. Die eerste tekens van hierdie bakterie is die teenwoordigheid van 'n geel bakteriese slym wat op die bloeiwyse voorkom. Hulle kan ook lastige onkruide wees, maar word gelukkig redelik maklik beheer. Lolium-spesies is die eerste grasse wat deur mens vir weiding aangeplant is. 

Verspreiding 
Raaigras kom oorspronklik van Europa, maar kom vandag in feitlik alle dele van die wêreld voor. 

Kenmerke:

  • 'n Digte, sagte polgras
  • Bloeiwyse 'n afgeplatte groen aar met blompakkies eweredig aan weerskante gerangskik.
  • Blare is donkergroen, haarloos en blink.
  • Halms gewoonlik onvertak.
  • Groei gewoonlik op klam versteurde plekke wanneer nie aangeplant nie.
  • Blom van Oktober tot Desember.


Afmetings 
Halms: 250-800 mm hoog.
Bloeiwyse: 100-300 m lank.
Blompakkies: 10-15mm lank.
Blaarskyf: 30-200 mm lank.
Blaarsyf: 2-6 mm breed.
