Tef (Eragrostis tef) 

Habitat 
Tef word op landerye en langs nuwe paaie aangeplant. Dit goei ook op versteurde plekke, in die meeste grondsoorte. 

Soortgelyke spesies 
Eragrostis tef is waarskynlik uit E. pilose veredel. Die twee grasse lyk baie eenders, behalwe dat E. tef meer blaarryk is. Dit is ook na verwant aan E. aethiopica, wat gewoonlik naby tydelike watergate in Bosveldgebiede voorkom. 

Gebruike 
Tef is eerste in Suid-Afrka an 'n eenjarige, aangeplante weiding ontwikkel. Dit is veral geskik vir hooi en is 'n gewilde bron van voeding vir renperde. Tef is glo aanvanklik deur 'n renperdboer as beddegoed gebruik. Nadat agtergekom is dat die perde al hul beddegoed opvreet, met 'n toename in kondisie, is tef vir perdevoeding aangeplant. In Ethiopi? is meer as die helfte van die land se jaarlikse graanproduksie van tefgras afkomstig. Die afgelope jare het tef ook baie gewild geraak om nuut ontblote grond te hersaai en so teen gronderosie te beskerm, dikwels is 'n mengsel van E. curvula. 

Verspreiding 
Oorspronklik van die noordoostelike dele van Afrika. Saad van Ethiopi? is na baie ander tropiese dele van die wêreld, ook suiderlike Afrika, versprei. 

Kenmarke

  • 'n Slap, eenjarige, soms digte polgras.
  • Bloeiwyses met slap vertakkings.
  • Blompakkies teen bloei-asse saamgedruk.
  • Blaarskyf haarloos, betreklik dun en sag.
  • 'n Uitheemse gras wat slegs op versteurde plekke voorkom.
  • Die hele plant is liggroen wanneer jonk.
  • Blom van November tot Mei.

Halms: 200-900 mm hoog
Bloeiwyse: 100-300 mm lank 
Blompakkies: 6-9 mm lank
Blaarskyf: Tot 300 mm lank
Blaarskyf: Tot 4 mm breed
